HipHopGrails

The flagship auction destination for hip-hop memorabilia and celebrity drops — engineered on Azure, .NET, Next.js and PostgreSQL.

HipHopGrails

HipHopGrails is the breakout auction platform for hip-hop culture — the first destination of its kind, often described as the Sotheby's of the streets. We built it end-to-end on a Microsoft Azure cloud, with a .NET microservices core, a Next.js front end and a PostgreSQL data layer. From the bidding engine to consignment workflows, identity, escrow and live event run-of-show, every layer is ours.

How we
delivered.

Brief, architecture decisions, what shipped and where it stands now — in our own words.

The brief

HipHopGrails came to us with a category-defining ambition: build the auction destination for hip-hop culture — the Sotheby's of the streets — and build it as a defensible, regulated, high-trust platform from day one. The market was hungry but fragmented: artist memorabilia was sitting on Instagram comments and DMs, celebrity drops were leaking on resale sites at a fraction of their value, and consignors had no professional venue that understood the culture.

The brief was end-to-end. We owned product strategy, brand, engineering, mobile, ops tooling and the compliance posture — and we own it still. This is a flagship engagement for us, the platform we point to when people ask what we can do.

Architecture & engineering choices

We chose .NET 8 microservices on Microsoft Azure, with PostgreSQL as the system of record, Next.js for the web surface and React Native for iOS + Android. The Azure choice was deliberate: Azure SignalR Service handles 100k+ concurrent WebSocket connections on live-auction nights without us operating a single bidding server ourselves, and Azure AD B2C gave us per-jurisdiction identity with KYC-bound profiles out of the box.

The bidding engine is the heart of the platform. It is server-authoritative, sub-100ms broadcast, and writes every bid to an immutable audit log that survives subpoena. Anti-snipe extensions, soft-close logic, reserve handling and live-event run-of-show are all encoded as a typed state machine, not a CRUD model — when a $40k Travis Scott McLaren bid lands in the last 12 seconds of an auction, the platform does the right thing without a human in the loop.

What we shipped

  • Bidding engine on Azure SignalR with anti-snipe, soft-close and live-event extensions
  • Consignment, condition reports and seller flows for labels, artists, curators and estates
  • Escrow, KYC, AML and high-value-lot payout rails via Stripe + specialist partners
  • Operator console for run-of-show, inventory, moderation, dispute and live drops
  • Native iOS + Android apps with push, biometric auth, deep-linking and offline cart
  • Audit trails, compliance posture and dispute workflows for high-value collectibles

Where it stands now

HipHopGrails is live, has run dozens of marquee auctions, and is the engagement we've extended the most. We continue to operate the platform alongside the HipHopGrails team — every event, every drop, every regulatory check-in. The architecture has not had to be rewritten once in three years, which is the highest compliment a platform engineer can pay another platform engineer.
